Jana Hönke ist Professorin und Inhaberin des Lehrstuhls Soziologie in Afrika an der Universität Bayreuth. Sie leitet derzeit das ERC INFRAGLOB-Projekt Africa's Infrastructure Globalities und ist Teil des Forschungsnetzwerks Postcolonial Hierarchies in Peace and Conflict und des Forschungsverbunds Deutungskämpfe im Übergang. Ihre Forschung befasst sich mit der Frage, wie Governance-Praktiken ko-produziert und angefochten werden, wie sie sich verbreiten und welche Auswirkungen sie haben. In ihrer aktuellen Arbeit untersucht sie, wie sich politische Geografien durch Süd-Süd-Beziehungen verändern, indem sie die umstrittenen sozialen und sicherheitspolitischen Arrangements im Zusammenhang mit multinationalen Unternehmen und groß angelegten Infrastrukturprojekten in Afrika untersucht. Sie führt Feldforschungen an verschiedenen Orten durch, unter anderem in Europa, China und Brasilien, aber ein Großteil ihrer Arbeit findet in Afrika südlich der Sahara statt, wo sie in Südafrika, der Demokratischen Republik Kongo, Sambia, Tansania, Mosambik und Guinea forscht.

Sie ist die Autorin von "Transnational Business and Security Governance. Hybrid Practices in a Postcolonial World" (2013), "The Global Making of Policing. Postcolonial Perspectives" (mit Mueller, 2016), und 'Africa's Global Infrastructures. South-South Transformation in Practice' (mit Cezne, Yang, 2023). Ihre Artikel sind in führenden Fachzeitschriften wie International Political Sociology, Security Dialogue, African Affairs, Governance, World Development, Global Sociology und Environment and Planning D erschienen. Sie ist außerdem Mitherausgeberin der Buchreihe Spaces of Peace, Security and Development bei Bristol University Press und gehört dem Editorial Board von International Political Sociology, European Journal of International Relations und Security Dialogue an.

Zuvor war sie Associate Professor und Rosalind Franklin Fellow für Internationale Beziehungen an der Universität Groningen. Davor arbeitete sie als Dozentin für Internationale Beziehungen am Fachbereich Politik und Internationale Beziehungen der Universität Edinburgh und als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am SFB 700 "Governance in Räumen begrenzter Staatlichkeit" der Freien Universität Berlin. Sie war 2015/16 Vertretungsprofessorin am Zentrum für Konfliktforschung der Philipps-Universität Marburg und hatte Gaststipendien am Centre for International Policy Studies und der Graduate School of Public and International Affairs der Universität Ottawa, am Centre of Criminology der Universität Kapstadt und an der Sociology of Work Unit der Universität Witwatersrand. Sie hat einen Magister (MA) in Afrikastudien, Politikwissenschaft und Wirtschaftswissenschaften (Universität Leipzig) und einen Doktortitel in Politikwissenschaft der Freien Universität Berlin.
