Bavarian Centre for Peace and Conflict Research. Struggles over meaning in periods of transition

The aim of the project is to establish a Centre for Peace and Conflict Research, which intensifies regional and interdisciplinary cooperation and networking of peace and conflict research in Bavaria, develops sustainable structures of cooperation and thus strengthens the interdisciplinarity and strategic capability of peace and conflict research regionally and  beyond.

A research network of partners at the Universities of Bayreuth, Augsburg and Nürnberg-Erlangen and the Institute for Contemporary History (IfZ) in  Munich will begin with joint thematic research over the coming four years, focusing on social “struggles over meaning” in periods of transition across time and space. The guiding question is under which conditions interpretative struggles contribute to peace. The project hence focuses on pressing societal challenges of our times - locally and inter- and transnationally – as they crystallize in debates around how to make sense of, represent and deal with (colonial) history, memory, universal rights, and diversity.

The project has started in April 2022 and is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
