Welcome to the Chair for Sociology in Africa

The Sociology in Africa chair group engages in internationally renowned research and teaching that centres on two themes: International/Global Political Sociology from Africa, and Peace and Conflict Studies/Critical Security Studies.

Master of Arts programme African Studies: Critical Perspectives on Society, Politics and Culture accepts new students for the winter term!

Applications for winter 2024/2025 will be accepted from March 1 to July 15.
  

  • Thematic and/or disciplinary study focus while centering Africa as an epistemic site of knowledge production

  • Interdisciplinary emphasis combining insights from sociology and politics, social and cultural anthropology, history, and the study of religion.

  • University on the forefront of interdisciplinary African research in Europe with many partner universities in Africa, and the prestigious “Africa Multiple” Cluster of Excellence and the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies.

We encourage international applicants to apply early! 
Please note: Applicants from outside the EU who have obtained their degree abroad have to first upload the application documents via uni-assist. This needs to be done at least 6-8 weeks BEFORE the July 15 deadline. 


 B.A. Interdisciplinary African Studies

Offers a strong cross-disciplinary component but also the option to specialize in politics and sociology. It is mainly taught in German but also offers occasional courses in English.

Our research

      • contributes to the development of Global Political Sociology, with a focus on Africa.

      • is at the intersection of Global Political Sociology, International Relations/Political Science and African Studies, and from there, develops theoretical and methodological innovations.

      • is part of the Cluster of Excellence Africa Multiple. We also build towars a new interdisciplinary research focus on peace and conflict at the University of Bayreuth (see research projects HIERARCHIES, ÜBERGÄNGE/TransitionalConflicts).

      • involves international collaboration on the ERC-project "Africa's Infrastructure Globalities (INFRAGLOB), with focus on China and Brazil.
