Africa Talks Environment – Interdisciplinary Conference in Munich
17th of November, 2025
On the 19th of November 2025, leading scholars and practitioners will meet at the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften (BAdW) in Munich for Africa Talks Environment: Umweltkrisen im afrikanischen Kontext. Organized by the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Cluster of Excellence "Africa Multiple", the one-day conference offers an interdisciplinary forum on urgent environmental challenges across the African continent. Africa faces severe climate impacts, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation, yet also drives innovation and knowledge production. Experts from Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, France, the Netherlands, and Germany will exchange perspectives throughout the day.
The event will be opened by remarks from Markus Schwaiger (BAdW) and Rüdiger Seesemann (Cluster of Excellence "Africa Multiple"). Three roundtables will explore Resources and Environmental Justice, Agriculture and Innovation and Biodiversity Loss and Restoration.
In the evening a keynote by Dr. Auma Obama, “Der Elefant im Porzellanladen – wie externe Eingriffe die afrikanische Landwirtschaft und ihre Nachhaltigkeit beeinflussen,” will examine the consequences of global interventions in African agriculture and the importance of local agency.
The symposium inaugurates a new partnership between the Cluster of Excellence "Africa Multiple" and the BAdW, strengthening dialogue between research, society and policy.
