Barbara Gruber

Faculty of Humanities and Social Science
Department of Sociology

Barbara is a PhD Candidate at the University of Groningen (NL) and supervised by Jana Hönke. She works at the intersection of security and psychology, asking which influence the psy-sciences (psychotherapy, psychology and psychiatry) have on security practices and concepts. Her focus is on resilience and radicalisation in European Counter-Terrorism strategies, especially the Netherlands and Germany. She shows how the prevention of radicalisation through resilience practices opens up a space of contestation between the security and the social sector.

Before that, Barbara worked as a researcher at the Austrian Institute for International Affairs (2015-2017) in the Jubiläums Fond Project “The Governance of Resilience”. Barbara studied International Development at the University of Vienna (AT). International Development engaged critically with what development means in and for the Global South. Her focus became the intersection of conflict and development, thus she engaged in peace and conflict studies. Her MA thesis was about the identity construction of the Ejercito de Liberacion Nacional in Colombia and its impact on the conflict. Part of it was published in Small Wars & Insurgencies.
